Copal Resin — A Natural Aromatic Resin

Copal resin is a natural tree resin traditionally used as incense for smudging and scenting a space. When heated, it gradually melts and releases a distinctive resinous aroma with woody, smoky, fresh, and slightly citrusy undertones.

Copal aromatic resin is suitable for homes, meditation rooms, yoga studios, and other spaces where a special atmosphere is desired. Unlike incense sticks, natural Copal resin contains no wooden core and requires the use of charcoal or a special incense burner.

Copal Resin - A Detailed Overview What is it

The name "Copal" encompasses aromatic resins obtained from several species of tropical trees. Consequently, the color, size of the pieces, and aroma may vary slightly between different types of Copal.

Natural Copal resin typically appears as small, hard pieces in light, golden, or milky shades. Upon heating, its aroma intensifies: fresh resinous notes emerge first, followed by warm woody and smoky undertones.

Copal is highly prized for its clean, distinctive scent. It can be used on its own or blended with myrrh and other resinous incenses.

Uses for Copal Resin

Copal aromatic resin is used in a variety of ways:

- for scenting indoor spaces;
- for traditional space smudging;
- during meditation and quiet relaxation;
- during yoga sessions and breathing practices;
- during personal spiritual and cultural practices;
- as an ingredient in aromatic blends with other natural resins.

Copal is intended for use as incense. It should not be ingested or applied to the skin.

How to use Copal resin correctly

For traditional smudging, you will need a heat-resistant burner, special incense charcoal, and metal tongs.

1. Place the burner on a flat, non-flammable surface.
2. Pour a little sand inside to protect the bottom from high heat.
3. Pick up the charcoal with the tongs and light it.
4. Wait until the charcoal is fully ignited and covered with a light coating of ash.
5. Place a small piece of Copal resin on top.
6. Gradually add more resin in small amounts as needed.
7. When finished, ensure the charcoal is completely extinguished.

An alternative method is to heat the resin in an electric burner designed for natural incense. This option allows for better control over the temperature and the intensity of the aroma.
